Tweets and Twitter and things that Glitter

I'm wondering how many people who "blog" on Blogger also "tweet" on Twitter?  What a strange statement you would have thought I was making if I had written that question ten years ago.  At that time, very few, if any of my readers had ever heard any of these terms.  Blog was barely a word back then - Blogger.com had only been launched a year prior to this century - in August, 1999.  And it was only five years ago that Twitter was launched.

In a 2009 Time essay, technology author Steven Johnson described the basic mechanics of Twitter as "remarkably simple"
"As a social network, Twitter revolves around the principle of followers. When you choose to follow another Twitter user, that user's tweets appear in reverse chronological order on your main Twitter page. If you follow 20 people, you'll see a mix of tweets scrolling down the page: breakfast-cereal updates, interesting new links, music recommendations, even musings on the future of education".
I have a Twitter account, but I don't use it.  I think I've tweeted just a handful of times when I first opened my account - it just doesn't interest me.  I guess it's a good way to keep up with celebrities if you're interested in that sort of thing - I'm not.  I already do Facebook and since Twitter only allows 140 characters for comments, long-winded people like me are left out in the cold.  It's a fine art to say something witty and interesting with so few characters but I'm one of these who when given a 1500 word count short story contest to enter, I always end up with 1749 words.  Tweeting is not for me.

Tonight while I was arranging some vintage jewelry for photo's to list on Etsy, I was also reading an article about tweeting which made me come up with the unusual title of this post.  I was thinking  that I prefer things that glitter -  sparkly things like diamonds, stars in the sky, Christmas tree lights, shiny baubles and glittery rhinestones.  Tiara's and crowns, crystals on chandeliers, stained glass as it sparkles in the sunlight.  Candles that glow, flickering firelight, silver candlesticks and the glow of the harvest moon.  The first fireflies in June and the way a child's eyes light up on Christmas morning - these are things that I find much more delightful than Twitter - things that glitter.

What about you?  Do you twitter?  How do you use it and why?  I love to hear your ideas.  Or are you like me - Do you prefer things that glitter?

  1. I'm not a glittery type of feller. I'm with you on the glamour folks, though. Never had much interest in what some celebrity was spending their money on. I don't tweet. I hardly Fb anymore.
If you tweet are you known as a twit? ;)

  2. Mike, there's surely a few things in that glitter list that you can appreciate - like "the glow of the harvest moon" and "the first fireflies of June". Hey, that rhymes, doesn't it.

And actually, I think the word twit was somewhere in the article I was reading. ;)

  3. Hi, dear Glenda.
Thank you for the information about blogger and Twitter.
the situation for twitter with me is kind of "ditto" (hope using this word right way). I lost interest almost same reason, haha.
You'll know the answer for the glitter if you see my sidebar p;)

  4. I rarely go on twitter now. My blog post automatically to twitter and face book. I open the twitter and face book because I was hoping it helped with our HenPal nest box business. It did some. I think the Facebook helped more with it, though.

I don't blog as much as I use to. It is very time consuming and I was missing too much of real life.

Glitter and little children's laughs, and fresh country air is much more fun!
    Have a great weekend.

P.S. The floors in the picture are oak that my husband cut from trees here on the farm, cut the boards on the sawmill and put down years ago.

  5. I'm afraid that I leave all the twittering and tweeting to the birds and I don't do Facebook either. I like to be incognito when I write and like you, I don't like to be restricted to how much I write and am not interested in other peoples' views on breakfast cereals!
I enjoy glittery things too, so we have some things that we share in common.

  6. Hi Glenda. Like you, I do like glitter! I've never been on Twitter, but I am on facebook. My daughter is on Twitter and she tweets quite a lot! (It's a whole new world, isn't it?!). I find it hard enough keeping on top of my blogging to be honest.

  7. I have to admit I do occassionally flirt with Twitter - I have a link on my phone so can post something that is happening straight away. My love affair with facebook is fading since friends started posting about their favourite causes ... all the time! I love blogging but have been away for two weeks now and its taking me a long time to catch up!
